The average length of pregnancy varies between 60 and 72 days. The cycle can be divided into the following five main stages:
First stage
This stage lasts for about 12 days. The sperms and the eggs are combined and fertilized in the oviduct which is part of the reproductive system.
Second stage
This is the early stage of pregnancy when morning sickness may be seen. Food intake will also decrease due to nausea.
Third stage
This is the middle stage of pregnancy. Food intake will increase along with weight gains as the foetuses get bigger.
Fourth stage
This is called the pre-labour stage. The cat will prepare herself for delivery. The enlarged nipples will start to produce milk. She will start nesting and find an appropriate place for delivery.
Fifth stage
The pregnant cat will be in labour and you may see a discharge of blood or other fluids coming out of the vulva. The birth of one kitten can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes.
Care during pregnancy:
1. Consult a veterinarian for a pregnancy check up.
2. Increase the amount of food provision. Feed her a diet that is nutritionally balanced for pregnant cats.
3. Administer preventatives for external and internal parasites.
4. Avoid vigorous exercise and medications that may cause irreversible damage to the foetuses. Consult a veterinarian if needed.
5. Minimise human intervention during labour. Seek help from your veterinarian if you encounter any problem.
