Don’t we all wish our little fury friends can talk to us and let us know when they need help? To many of us, identifying whether our furry friends need emergency care is not easy. If you find your pet acting strangely, don’t panic! Here are some signs that emergency care may be needed:
• Not eating and drinking for more than 24 hours
• Breathing difficulty: While at rest, the normal resting respiratory rate for dogs and cats should be under 45 per minute. You can put your hand on your pet’s chest and double-check, or simple count it from a distance without causing unnecessary stress
• Ingestion of poisonous food, substances, or bones
• Excessive bleeding: a wound that does not stop bleeding within 5-10 minutes, or bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, coughing up blood, or blood in urine
• Abnormal gum colour: Normal gums should be pink. If you see white, pale pink or yellow gums, your pet may not be getting enough oxygen or it may have some serious metabolic diseases
• Loss of mobility: your pet cannot walk or maintain balance normally
• Severe vomiting or diarrhea within 24 hours
