【VMC Vets Tips | What is Cat Flu?】

Achoo! Your feline friend may also catch the flu, just like a human can. Cat flu is a common respiratory infection yet a potentially dangerous illness to both kittens and adult cats. Let’s explore this infection:

Common symptoms of cat flu:
- Running nose and eyes
- Sneezing
- Fever
- Inflamed or sore throat
- Loss of voice
- Loss of appetite
- Oral ulcers
- Conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Some serious symptoms may develop in some kittens or senior cats with weakened immune systems, such as pneumonia or a secondary respiratory infection.

What causes cat flu?

Mainly caused by two viruses: Feline calicivirus (FCV) or Feline herpes virus (FHV), other infections include Chlamydia felis and Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Transmission: Direct contact with infected cats via their discharge from the nose, eye, or mouth. If you suspect your cat has flu-like symptoms, contact your vet immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to help your furry friend stay healthy.
