While we do not advocate for breeding, if you are committed to breeding your dog, they must be at least fully vaccinated, dewormed and have well aligned set of teeth. Health tests for the relevant problem that the breed is susceptible to are strongly advised. These might be ocular examination, cardiac assessment, hip score, elbow score or certain genetic testing. Typically these are done by specialists of relevant fields, consult your primary veterinarian for referral advice.
The average gestation period (from the time of mating) for the bitch is around 61-63 days (9 weeks).
If you think your bitch might be pregnant, you might gradually see the following physical changes:
1. Increased mammary gland size
2. Pink nipples
3. Mucoid vaginal discharge
4. She might show reduced appetite
5. She might be more independent or attached
Other changes that will be observed as pregnancy progresses:
1. Increased appetite
2. Weight gain
3. Increase in abdominal girth
4. She will develop a more prominent vulva
However, all these signs might be seen in pseudopregnancy (false pregnancy).
