CityU VMC Vet Tips Friday! | Canine Reproduction Series – Do male dogs go into heat?
Apr 02, 2021
Do male dogs become in heat like the females? This is a question most pet owners ask. The answer is…no! Male dogs do not go into heat during breeding seasons like the females.
The growth of male dogs is much faster than the females. Male dogs reach the age of puberty within a few months and become sexually mature at six to nine months old. Semen production will start and they can mate females to produce fertile offspring then.
Once a male dog has achieved sexual maturity, he can mate throughout the whole year without any breaks if he is sound and healthy, for up to two to three times a day on average.
Behavioural Change:
Females release pheromones in their vaginal discharge and urine during breeding seasons. Intact male dogs can smell these chemical compounds from a distance of up to 4.8 kilometers. They will track females in heat and often fight each other for mating.
Smelling these pheromones will induce significant behavioural changes to the males. They will mount nearby objects and may stop eating and drinking if not allowed to mate.
The males will try to show their presence to the females in heat. They will spray urine in different places and increase the frequency of urination to demonstrate their dominance and mark their territories.
