【VMC Vets Tips! | Pet ER: Kidney disease in dogs – causes and symptoms】

Dog’s kidneys have similar functions as human kidneys. They remove waste products from the bloodstream, regulate the levels of certain electrolytes such as potassium and sodium, conserve water, and produce concentrated urine. If a dog develops kidney failure, the kidneys will no longer function efficiently, and this will lead to a domino effect of multiple health issues.

What Causes Kidney Failure in Dogs?

Kidney problems in dogs can be acute or chronic. Acute kidney failure is usually associated with toxins, infections, and chemicals like antifreeze and household cleaners. Severe dehydration, heat stroke, snake bites, or Leptospirosis (a bacterial infection) may also lead to acute kidney failure.

Chronic kidney failure, on the other hand, is commonly seen in older dogs. The exact cause is often difficult to pinpoint as early symptoms of chronic kidney disease are easily overlooked because they are mild in nature.

Kidney failure starts when the healthy population of cells in aging kidneys begins to decline and die. Besides, bacterial Infection such as Leptospirosis transmitted via contaminated water is found to be a common cause of acute renal failure. Sometimes, dental disease may also lead to chronic kidney failure in older dogs as bacteria built up in the oral cavity will gradually enter the bloodstream affecting the kidneys.

Symptoms of kidney disease or failure

- increased water consumption and urination
- loss of appetite
- depression
- vomiting, diarrhea, and a strong breath (uraemic breath)

If you notice these signs in your dog suggesting kidney problems, please do not hesitate to call your veterinarian. A combination of blood tests and urinalysis can be performed to assess the kidney function of your pet.
