【VMC Vets Tips | Snake Bites in Dogs: What do you need to know - 2】

Every year, many furry friends in Hong Kong get bitten by snakes. It’s crucial to be aware of the dangers of snake bites in dogs and take necessary precautions to keep your furry friend safe.

Most snake bites occur on the front half of the dog; the head, neck, chest, and front legs are bitten most frequently. Certain snake bites are not painful but can be deadly, like the banded Kraits.

Several venomous snakes are lethal if not treated promptly by emergency veterinarian. If your pet experiences a snake bite, time is of the essence! Here are some important tips to note:

- Take your pet to the emergency IMMEDIATELY
- DO NOT place a tourniquet or attempt to do anything with the pet or the region where the pet was bitten
- Try to recognise or take a photo of the snake (but do not attempt to catch the snake and your safety is the top priority)

Upon your arrival at CityU VMC Emergency Service, we have a snake identification cart to show owners to identify the snakes. We also offer several types of antivenom (also known as antivenin) to treat snake envenomation. We are able to support the most critical cases with advanced care, if required which includes not only drugs but mechanical ventilation, also knowns as “life support” if bitten by a neurotoxic snake such as a Krait or Cobra.

Here are the tips to lower the risk of snake bites in dogs:

- Pet owners should pay close attention when walking their dogs to be aware of a possible encounter with a snake
- Avoid walking in wooded or areas with shrubs
- Keep the garden area free of clutter, pots and areas where snakes can hide

If your pet has been bitten by a snake, please bring them to CityU VMC 24-Hour Emergency Service immediately, no appointment is required!
