CityU VMC Vets Tips! | Pet ER: Nose Problem with Dogs

A dog’s nose is a powerful “device” that guides him through his days. Any upper respiratory problem can give our flurry friends lots of trouble. Therefore, never overlook mild symptoms such as runny nose and sneezing Let’s look at some common clinical signs and find out their underlying causes.

Upper respiratory problems that are commonly seen in dogs include:

1. Nosebleeds: damage to blood vessels in the nose caused by infection or cancer. Dogs with clotting disorders may well suffer regular nosebleeds.
2. Nasal Mites
。Microscopic mites like living in the nasal sinuses and passages of dogs where it causes itchiness and irritation
3. Sneezing and Reverse Sneezing
。 Sneezing can be caused by infection, irritation, or allergy
。 Reverse Sneezing: it can occur if a dog’s soft palate becomes irritated. The dog will then forcefully attempt to inhale through their nose, which causes the dog to backward sneeze. Any irritation to the nose, sinuses, or ack of the throat can trigger this.
4. Rhinitis
。 It leads to chronic nasal discharge and sneezing. The cause can be difficult to identify, and it can be secondary to infection or allergy.
5. Aspergillosis
。 This occurs when fungi colonize in the nasal cavity. It is most found in breeds with long noses, and symptoms include nosebleeds, facial pain and chronic nasal discharge that starts out straw-colored which rapidly becomes purulent.

Signs of Problem
。 Look for any sign of unusual nasal discharge, from clear to bloody.
。 Keep an eye out for excessive dryness, a crusty nose
。 Observe your dog's nose as it breathes. If the nostrils flare more than usual, it could be a sign of breathing problems.

Please talk to your vet if you notice any unusual discharge in dogs. A quick exam by your vet is often the best way to check the root cause of the problem and an appropriate treatment can be formulated as soon as possible.
