【VMC Vets Tips | HEATWAVE ALERT ! Keep Your Pet Safe in the Heat - 1】
May 23, 2023
Summer is coming & heatwave is here! High temperatures can cause heat stroke, dehydration, and other emergencies. Heat stroke happens quickly and is often fatal. Keep our furry friends safe with these tips:
- AVOID strenuous outdoor activities when the temperature exceeds 29°C
- Ensure animals always have access to shade and fresh drinking water
- NEVER leave a dog unattended in a hot car. The temperature inside a parked car rises dangerously within minutes, even if the windows are partially open
- Be mindful of hot surfaces like pavement, which can cause burns to paw pads
- Do not take dogs hiking or for long walks during hot and humid times
- It’s recommended to walk dogs during the cooler times in the morning and evening
The following pets have an increased risk of heat stroke. Pet parents should be alert when the temperature exceeds 26°C:
- Less than 6 months old, or older than 7 years
- Flat-faced dogs (e.g. French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs, Pekingese)
- Large-breed dogs (e.g. Labradors, German Shepherds)
- Thick-coated breeds (e.g. Huskies, Bernese Mountain Dogs)
- Overweight pets
