CityU VMC Vet Tips Wednesday! | Canine Disease Series – Kennel Cough (2)

How can you prevent your dog from catching kennel cough? And if your dog has been diagnosed with kennel cough, what can you do to comfort it?

Treatment:
1. Remove any neck collar which may cause pressure on the neck and irritate the airway.
2. Turn on the humidifier to raise the humidity level at home, which can help alleviate signs by soothing the airway. If you don’t have a humidifier, bringing your dog into the bathroom for steam (such as when you take a hot shower!) may also work.
3. Keep the infected dog indoors and to avoid excessive exercise or stress at home.

Prevention:
Kennel cough is caused by a number of pathogens, and these can be prevented by good hygiene measures and by the avoidance of overcrowding. One of the pathogens, Bordetella, is a bacterium that may be prevented with vaccination. Please note that the vaccination does not prevent the other potential pathogens of kennel cough, so your dog may still develop symptoms despite having received the Bordetella vaccine.
Pathogens can be spread either through direct contact with an infected dog or through contaminated objects/surfaces. Separating any dogs that are known to be infected and regularly cleaning the environment (such as cages, water bowls, toys, etc.) can help reduce the spread of Kennel cough.
